In the early days of commercial radio, stations were assigned call letters based on their location. For example, WLS in Chicago, KGO in San Francisco, and WBZ in Boston. In the early days of FM radio, stations were still assigned call letters based on their location, but with a few exceptions.
One of those exceptions is WFMT in Chicago. The call letters were assigned to the station in the late 1940s, long before FM radio became popular. The original owner of the station, Frederick M. Packard, had a personal connection to the call letters. His middle name was Foster, and his father’s middle name was Matthias. Matthias was the original owner of the WFMT call letters in Cincinnati, so Packard decided to use the call letters for his station in Chicago.
WFMT is one of the few stations in the country that has kept its original call letters. Most stations have changed their call letters at least once over the years.
There are a few other exceptions, including WPLJ in New York and WXRT in Chicago. Both of those stations were assigned their call letters in the early 1970s, when the FCC stopped assigning call letters based on location.
St. Peter’s University in Jersey City, New Jersey, and Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, both launched radio stations this week.
St. Peter’s University’s station is called WPST, and Purdue University’s station is called WYCM.
Both stations are streaming online, and you can listen to them by clicking on the links below.

Can I stream March Madness?
With the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament set to tip off next week, many basketball fans are wondering if they can stream the games online. The answer is yes, but there are a few things you need to know before you can start watching.
In order to stream the games online, you will need a cable or satellite subscription that includes ESPN. If you don’t have cable or satellite, you can still watch the games online, but you will need to purchase a streaming package from one of the major providers, such as Sling TV, Hulu, or DirecTV.
The NCAA Tournament will be streamed live on the ESPN and CBS websites, as well as on the WatchESPN and CBS Sports apps. However, these streams are only available to viewers in the United States. If you are traveling outside of the U.S. during the tournament, you will not be able to watch the games online.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the streaming quality may not be as good as the live broadcast on television. So if you have the option, we recommend watching the games on TV instead.
